Homosexuality is a sin. How's that beard coming along, by the way?
"You shall not lie with a male as with a woman; it is an abomination" - Leviticus 18:22
Taking this one example (because it's relevant to my experience, & that of people I cherish), my (wordy) rant begins...
We see the word of God reflected in our laws, in the attitudes our neighbours, in what's acceptable viewing on TV, & as a viable excuse for murder.
According to the Bible, homosexuality is indeed an "abomination". Apparently this is a critically important entry, in a book that is the absolute word of God, & is the "line in the sand" for what our society will accept on this "issue".
I have to ask, though: Where are all the fisheries & Kiwi Bacon protesting, heavily bearded, slave owning, hemp wearing, Christians?
The same book that states an "entire culture of people" are an abomination, making it acceptable to discriminate against them on the street & in our legal system, also states:
"Whatever hath no fins nor scales in the waters, that shall be an abomination unto you" - Leviticus 11:12
"... and the swine, though it divides the hoof, having cloven hooves, yet does not chew the cud, is unclean to you." - Leviticus 11:7
"Do not cut the hair at the sides of your head or clip off the edges of your beard." - Leviticus 19:27
"Your male & female slaves are to come from the nations around you; from them you may buy slaves. You may also buy some of the temporary residents living among you & the members of their clans born in your country, & they will become your property." - Leviticus 25:44-45
"... do not plant your field with two kinds of seed. Do not wear material woven of two kinds of material." - Leviticus 19:19
If you're not following the other "rules", why have you chosen to follow only the one? A "rule" inflicting such cruel emotional & physical pain on your fellow humans.
So... how important, really, is your obedience to God & his word?
It's still ok for Hollywood movies to script that something is "gay" when describing something that's undesirable. Men & women are still beaten on the street, sometimes to death, if it's even assumed they "bat for the wrong team".
Saddest of all, to me, we have young people choosing to end their lives rather than show up to school one more day.
Why am I picking on Christians?
I love my faith-driven friends. What ever your religion, if you're truely living with love for others, you have my vote to believe what ever you chose. If you are doing good, you are the best of what we are as a species. However...
The burden of the existence of the above ranted behaviour is on you.
It has been, & still is, your morality that guides our society. It is your belief systems that have lead to the untimely deaths of countless, beautiful, "souls". It is on you to help us move forward, & to actively demonstrate the love that is claimed to be the foundation of your religion.
I've used the "issue" of homosexuality to make my point, because it's relevant to my experience, but this extends to descrimination & hate where ever it occurs.
I'm calling on you to make better choices.
Demonstrate true free will, & choose love over descrimination cloaked in piety .
Help us fix this mess.
It took a while, but I hope you read this far, & you can see where I'm coming from. To lighten the mood a little in here, and end on a more "Me" flavour...
Rant Credit: I've just been watching a YouTube upload from "The Thinking Atheist"
I've taken just one small portion of that clip (Starting at 11mins 12secs), & turned it in to a post to express an opinion.
It's worth watching to the end. Though I don't agree with the way some of his arguements are constructed, is see where he's coming from/heading & the points made are valid.
